Things have already gone too far. A deputy sheriff in Texas has been assassinated while fueling his vehicle. An Illinois police officer has been killed. Popular music in certain communities is calling for killing of the police. This is too clearly, too directly involved in the question of whether we Christians are praying for those in authority. Whether we are or not, we must do more.
Paul's second letter to the Corinthians made it clear that our prayers are a powerful weapon. The world laughs at prayer. The belligerents spreading distrust and dislike and outright hatred towards the police, trading on a refusal to forgive certain events that were highly publicized - and polemicized - laugh at our thinking that being on our knees speaking to God will have any effect. "Let them pray," is their attitude, "it accomplishes nothing against our violence."
Our weapons operate in a different way, on a different level, in a different sphere. Their refusal to recognize the existence or the importance of a spiritual realm makes no difference. Mankind lived for centuries in ignorance of the roundness of Earth or the existence of vast, empty cosmic space in which it orbited the Sun. It didn't matter. The Earth revolved and it orbited unaffected by our unawareness or disbelief. Paul wrote, in II Corinthians 10:3-4, "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, (for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds)..."
Scripture has records of times when prayer did affect earthly warfare: Moses interceding on a hillside as Joshua battled the Amalekites, Joshua later praying for the sun to stand still, and of course the most famous example of all, Moses parting the Red Sea and using it against the Egyptian army. In the Church Age, we do battle on a spiritual level. Results are promised. Paul promised Timothy that praying for authorities, as he exhorted "first of all," would result in our ability to lead peaceful lives in godliness.
Fight back against this belligerent barbarity by praying for our police, for our National Guard, for our military. Pray for their spiritual well-being, their salvation, (where necessary), and Godly restraint and wisdom as they increasingly feel that their lives are more and more on the line and the public whom they protect appreciates them less and less.
Fight back, fellow Christians. Fight back and help frustrate the Devil.
A Christian man living in Southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Came under conviction in 1978 or 1979 to begin believing the Bible is the inspired Word of God. Came to saving faith in Christ in October 1982 by confessing I was a sinner by nature and only Christ could save me.
